Mango Chicken – 176 of 365

Mango Chicken

If I said “chicken with mango sauce,” what would you think?   Is a delicious image of succulent stir fried white meat pieces so carefully paired with a sweet and sticky fruit based sauce dancing around your head?  Yeah, that’s pretty much what I thought, too while ordering takeaway from Lion City next to Saigon’s Intercontinental Hotel.  To be honest the only reason I wanted to try this was due to some inexplicable craving for American style Chinese food, and Lion City’s special promotion of 50% off four different chicken dishes helped this impulse purchase come to fruition.

Unpacking the takeaway container at home made my eyes roll and I thought, yes, the aftermath here is my own darn fault for wading back into the chicken pool I try so hard to avoid in Vietnam.  I regret to report this is yet another chicken dish gone awry.  The $4 price tag for this entrée was four times the price of a much larger and much tastier street food meal, and had I paid the full $8 price, I’d have been sorely disappointed.   This one didn’t even include rice.  How in the world does something not come with rice in a country that is one giant rice paddy?

This Is NOT Mango Sauce

Think overfried chicken with a thin breading and then dry it out like some sort of bad Thanksgiving Day turkey.  I looked and looked and looked some more and finally just asked myself, “where the hell is the sauce?”  There it is…A tiny plastic bag held the answer and the “mango sauce” turned out to be as non-mango as something comes.  This was the same exact bottled sweet chili sauce from any grocery store with a syrupy bitter taste that is good in tiny doses only.

Bottled sweet chili sauce is a ketchup of sorts, and a little bit goes a long way.  It’s not like you’d dump a whole bottle of Heinz on fries so why would anyone expect to shower a cup of this over dried foul chunks?  A heap of very thinly sliced unripe mango strips tossed into the sauce gives some truth in advertising that yes, it is a mango based dish.

Don’t make me go down to the street market and buy a live chicken and skin it myself just so I can get a decent chicken meal.   I am not giving up though.  The quest for normal chicken continues…
