Thịt Heo Kho Trứng Braised Pork and Hard Boiled Egg – 311 of 365

Thịt Heo Kho Trứng

Lunch at Café 91 is never dull.  The bounty inside those metal serving pans spans the spectrum from highly edible to quite interesting for western tastes.  I dabbled in the more authentic side of Vietnamese cuisine and braced myself for what lay ahead.

The fatty edged pork strips and hard boiled eggs have fascinated me for months but working up the nerve to actually consume a plate of it was another story.  For sure the pork looked decent but eggs and I have an uneasy relationship, especially after eating the fertile duck and quail varieties.  Who wouldn’t be able to wonder what sort of feathered friend was trying to gestate inside those rubbery walls?

This egg was like a Christmas present.  Sometimes unwrapping the box produces a crappy dud and other times a nice surprise.  Luckily this egg turned out to be ok with no bird fetus jumping out at me.  It’s the small victories like that at mealtime that I savor most.

All Mixed Together

The braised pork tasted of both fish and soy sauces with slight spicy and sweet undertones.  The egg tasted like any ordinary egg but I must say the yolk was enormous.  In fact it was much larger than inside any normal grocery store egg I’ve ever seen back home.  I wonder if I ate a duck.

The spicy-sweet sauce was terrific ladled on the rice and some of the yolk accidentally smeared into the into this blank canvas.  Pasty hard boiled egg yolk and rice…on the surface what a nasty combination for the eyes to behold that is.  But I admit it tasted just fine, especially with a bit of the sauce ladled on top.

I never would have ever chosen this one just a few short months ago just due to the fact that a hard boiled egg coagulating in brown sauce is about as unappetizing for me to look at as food comes.  Thịt heo kho trứng goes to show though that judging a book by its cover would have caused me to miss a dish that is now one I will eat again.
